Snack in a Backpack is a non-profit organization that is affiliated with the Chattanooga Area Food Bank, part of the Feeding America Network.
If you are interested in volunteering with Snack in a Backpack, below you will find several ways you can help:
Packing - On Wednesday mornings, we pack children's meal bags at the Snack offices. Each meal bag assembled by volunteers contains at least six easy-to-prepare meals, milk, and snacks purchased primarily from Chattanooga Area Food Bank.
Delivery - Packed bags are delivered by volunteers to the area schools each week.
Teacher Boxes – Teacher boxes are packed with extra snacks for students who may get hungry throughout the school day.
Food Delivery – Periodically during the month we receive shipments from the Chattanooga Area Food Bank and need help moving pallets of food.
Fundraising Event - Annually we have one major fundraiser called "Champions for Children." We seek volunteers to help gather raffle items, decorate the venue, and work the event.
Summer Meals Program– As Snack in a Backpack takes on a larger role with the summer distribution of food to Fannin children, we will need additional volunteers to help with packing and distribution to the various summer food sites. Keeping Fannin children healthy by providing food year-round has always been a goal of the program.
Administrative – Occasionally we need help folding newsletters, writing thank you notes, delivering event posters, and helping us promote the organization through community and school events.
Community Outreach – If you belong to a church, civic, or community organization that would like more information about Snack in a Backpack, please contact us.
Amazon Smile - is a way for customers to support their favorite charitable organization every time they shop with Amazon. Shoppers who start at smile.amazon.com will find the same Amazon they know and love, with the bonus that Amazon will donate a portion of the price of eligible purchases to the charity of your choice.
As a former teacher and Snack in a Backpack volunteer, I can tell you that children can’t learn if their bellies aren’t full. It becomes a domino effect. If they come to school hungry, their behavior isn’t good and the day doesn’t get any better. It’s pretty simple, the brain doesn’t work if it is hungry! I volunteer to break this cycle.

We have a lot of children who come to school hungry every day in Fannin County. As a Mentor to a school student, my student met me for assistance one day not having eaten breakfast. Snack in a Backpack helps to fill the void for those children missing meals at home.
