Mission Statement
The mission of the Snack in a Backpack program is to
decrease the burden of childhood hunger in Fannin
County and surrounding areas by providing food-
insecure families with a weekend and school vacation
food assistance program.
The Snack in a Backpack School Year Program
- Provides food insecure children in Fannin and Polk Counties with food for weekends, holidays, and summer vacation breaks when school breakfasts and lunches are not available.
- Provides nutritious, healthy food that is easy to prepare.
- Provides summer meals for food insecure children when school is not in session.
- Serves the children most in need as determined by school staff who know them best.
- Is a community and volunteer supported program.
Our Land, the Children’s Future!
UPDATE: We're growing! We have officially acquired land to build our permanent home after renting space for nearly a decade. This is all thanks to a generous land donation from Kim & Peter Knutzen and the coordination of the Fannin County Development Authority.
What began in 2009 as an effort to provide food for 1st and 2nd graders at one school has grown into a year-round operation providing 600–650 children, K-12, with food each week to 13+ locations.
While the new building will help us serve our community for years to come, our priority is much more immediate. Children need food every weekend. Gifts today help us serve the children who are counting on us right now.
It Takes a Village
Since 2009, Snack in a Backpack has been helping Fannin children get nutritious and easy-to-prepare food they need for weekends, school breaks, and summer vacation breaks. Snack in a Backpack works in affiliation with the Chattanooga Food Bank.
